The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
