No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
