The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
