Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
