British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
